National Universities Commission Approves Establishment of Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe. This announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, during a formal presentation of the recognition letter to Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, in Abuja.
This approval places the university as the 66th state university in Nigeria and the 278th university in the Nigerian University System. The NUC’s recognition is a significant milestone for the state and its educational ambitions.
However, while the university is now officially recognized, Prof. Ribadu emphasized that academic activities would not commence immediately. A resource verification process will be carried out to assess the institution’s infrastructure, staffing, and academic resources. Only after this assessment will the NUC grant final approval for academic operations.
Governor Nwifuru shared that the university was conceived in 2021 to bridge the technical manpower gap in the state and offer residents access to quality and affordable tertiary education. The state government has already injected funds into critical infrastructure such as the Senate building, staff quarters, student hostels, faculty buildings, and the university library.
Additionally, the university has appointed principal officers, signaling its commitment to meeting the standards required for its eventual launch. With continued infrastructural development and the forthcoming resource verification, the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology is poised to contribute significantly to the state’s educational and economic development.
