In a bold economic relief measure, the Niger State Government has announced a statewide ban on the taxation of hawkers and petty traders, protecting small businesses from undue financial burdens.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the announcement at a press briefing at Government House, Minna, stating that multiple taxation on small traders had become an exploitative practice.

“We have observed with dismay how petty traders and hawkers are being subjected to multiple taxation. Effective immediately, no trader should be taxed,” he declared.

Governor Bago directed Local Government Chairmen and Councilors to ensure strict compliance with the new policy, warning that anyone found imposing illegal taxes on hawkers or petty traders would face consequences for extortion.

The Governor explained that Niger State now operates a centralized tax system, which exempts petty traders and hawkers from taxation.

“Our focus is to support small businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and boost the local economy. Hawkers and small traders should be given the opportunity to thrive without being overburdened by taxes,” he emphasized.

This directive has been widely applauded by traders and business groups, as it aligns with Governor Bago’s pro-business agenda aimed at fostering economic growth and financial stability for residents.

With this initiative, the Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering small businesses while ensuring equitable tax policies across the state.
