Sokoto State Ministry of Health Intensifies Efforts to Eradicate Neglected Tropical Diseases

The Sokoto State Ministry of Health has reiterated its commitment to eradicating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), as part of ongoing efforts to improve public health across the state.

Speaking at the World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day commemoration, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, highlighted the significant strides made by the state government in combating these diseases, in collaboration with Sight Savers and other development partners.

Dr. Abubakar noted that while substantial progress has been recorded, five key NTDs remain a challenge in Sokoto State, including:

        •       Trachoma

        •       Onchocerciasis

        •       Lymphatic Filariasis

        •       Schistosomiasis

        •       Soil-Transmitted Helminths

He emphasized the notable success in reducing cases of Trachoma, revealing that the number of Local Government Areas (LGAs) affected by the disease has dropped from fourteen to zero, demonstrating the effectiveness of government interventions and health programs.

The commissioner acknowledged the crucial role of development partners in supporting the fight against NTDs, stressing that continued collaboration will further accelerate progress in eliminating these diseases.

In his remarks, Suleiman Mohammed Wamakko, the State Program Manager for NTDs, encouraged residents to adopt good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of these diseases.

Other dignitaries who delivered goodwill messages at the event included:

        •       Dr. Muhammad Bello Marnona, Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary Healthcare Development

        •       Pharmacist Umar Attahiru, Director General, State Drugs and Medical Supply Management Agency

        •       Yusuf Abu Abdulkarim, Director of the Sokoto State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (SOCHEMA)

        •       Dr. Abdulganiyyu Yusuf, Director of Public Health

        •       Representatives of development partners

The event reinforced the Sokoto State Government’s unwavering commitment to disease eradication, improved healthcare delivery, and sustainable public health interventions.
