The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated a 720,000-litre-per-day capacity oxygen plant to Yobe State, a significant step towards reducing neonatal mortality rates and improving healthcare outcomes. The facility, handed over on Monday in Damaturu, is expected to serve not only Yobe State but also neighboring regions.

Cristian Mundate, UNICEF’s Country Representative in Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the oxygen plant in safeguarding children’s right to healthcare. “The absence of oxygen in healthcare facilities has contributed to the tragic loss of many newborns, especially those with birth complications,” she noted. Mundate highlighted that the plant is fully operational and capable of addressing critical health challenges in the state.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Lawan Gana, expressed profound gratitude to UNICEF for its unwavering support. He assured that the state government would prioritize the maintenance and safety of the oxygen plant to ensure its long-term functionality.

The oxygen plant donation underscores UNICEF’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access and protecting children’s lives, reinforcing Yobe’s healthcare infrastructure as a model for progress in the region.
