In a statement issued by Yusuf Ali, Senior Special Assistant on Digital and Strategic Communications, the government announced the appointment of Engr. Bamodu Yerima, a renowned geologist, as the pioneer Managing Director of YMDC.
Key Objectives of the Yobe Mining Development Company (YMDC):
1. Conduct comprehensive feasibility studies on the state’s solid mineral deposits.
2. Identify commercially viable mineral resources and attract potential investors.
3. Facilitate sustainable exploration and mining projects to drive economic growth.
4. Create employment opportunities for the youth and local communities.
5. Maximize revenue generation through effective resource utilization.
Vast Mineral Deposits in Yobe State
Yobe State is rich in untapped mineral resources, including:
• Gypsum
• Diatomite
• Limestone
• Kaolin
• Potash
Despite their economic potential, these resources have remained largely unexploited. The establishment of YMDC underscores the Buni administration’s commitment to unlocking the state’s natural wealth and positioning Yobe as a major player in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
Government’s Commitment to Economic Diversification
Governor Mai Mala Buni emphasized that the new mining company aligns with his administration’s drive for economic diversification, which aims to reduce dependence on oil revenue and explore alternative sources of income for the state.
The initiative is expected to attract local and international investors, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and enhance Yobe State’s revenue base, ultimately contributing to sustainable development.
With this strategic move, Yobe State joins other forward-thinking states in leveraging natural resources for long-term economic prosperity.
